Using PowerPoint to Simulate a SGD

February 22, 2023 @ 7:00 pm 8:00 pm

DESCRIPTION:

A challenge in both clinical training and clinical practice is the availability of speech generating devices. Most clinical programs do not have a sufficient inventory of SGDs to permit every student in an AAC class to have sufficient time to learn how the devices work and to get experience setting up a device and using it outside of the classroom. Likewise, most clinics do not have a wide inventory available to easily conduct AAC evaluations with the clients who might be candidates.  For individuals with developmental disorders or acquired language disorders, the challenge during the SGD trial compounds learning to use augmentative and alternative communication strategies with learning how to use the physical device. For individuals whose linguistic skills are intact but who cannot speak, the challenge is to provide the client with ample opportunities to utilize the SGD across settings and adjust the vocabulary/messages to fit the clients’ needs. The aim of this presentation is to illustrate how PowerPoint can be used to simulate basic SGD functions.

PRESENTED BY: Richard R. Hurtig, Ph.D., F-ASHA

MODERATED BY: Amy Goldman

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Richard Hurtig, Ph.D., F-ASHA, is a Professor Emeritus in the department of Communication Sciences & Disorders at The University of Iowa where he led an interdisciplinary team in the development of assistive technologies to facilitate patient-provider communication. That research led to the development of the patented noddle® smart switch that enables patients to summon their caregiver and to also control the noddle-chat communication tool to support patient-provider communication. He expanded noddle-chat to allow patients to participate in medical decision making and support the needs of patients with limited English proficiency. He served on the Patient-Provider Communication Network task force that developed and disseminated communication tools for use in Covid19 ICUs. He has presented at conferences and has published a text, several chapters, and numerous papers on AAC in acute care.
